New Zealand's third island, with more kiwi birds than people and a night walk that all but guarantees a sighting in the wild, a tiny fishing village as the only settlement, and a wilderness track considered one of the country's great remote walks.
The best time to visit Stewart Island is Dec–Feb, when typical daytime highs reach about 10°C (51°F).
