A papal palace that briefly made this the centre of the Catholic world instead of Rome, a broken bridge over the Rhone immortalised in a children's song the whole country still sings, and a theatre festival every July that takes over every corner of the walled town.
The best time to visit Avignon is Apr–Jun, Sep–Oct, when typical daytime highs reach about 21°C (69°F).
